Splitting Our Time Between Mountains & Water

Some people chase vacation homes. We chased two versions of peace — one afloat, one rooted. My name is Rebecca, and along with my husband Alex, we built The Rooted Sailor out of a lifestyle that didn’t quite fit into one box… or one zip code.
⛵ How It Started
Before I knew how to raise a sail or tie a cleat hitch, I bought my first sailboat at a marina in South Carolina. It was bold. It was a little reckless. It was perfect.
Alex, a full-time liveaboard on his Nautical Development Offshore 40, had already carved out his corner of dock life. We bonded over late-night cockpit beers and mutual frustration with our past relationships. You know — classic love story stuff.
Then came a last-minute trip to Iceland for the summer solstice. We left as friends and returned as something more. Not long after, I moved onto his boat. I sold my Pearson 30, traded in singlehanded sailing for partnership, and we began dreaming big.
🏞 Where the Mountains Come In
The original plan was to cruise full-time. But life tossed a few family curveballs, and we realized that even sailors need somewhere to anchor once in a while.
So we bought a small cabin in Franklin, North Carolina. It’s quiet. It smells like pine. And it gave me a place to garden again — something that’s always grounded me.
Instead of choosing between boat life or mountain life, we chose both.
Now, we spend part of the year in the mountains tending to soil, and the rest afloat on the lake, surrounded by canvas, teak, and the wind.
⚓ Why The Rooted Sailor?
This business wasn’t born in a boardroom. It was born between two worlds — with one hand on a tiller and the other in the dirt.
We started crafting goods that reflect our lifestyle:
Bags made from old sails
Sun shirts with sailor humor
Canvas aprons for garden + galley
Wooden cockpit tables, charcuterie boards, and nautical gear with soul
The Rooted Sailor is about intentionally built lives, not just handcrafted products.
🌱 What We’re Hoping to Build
We want to share:
DIY tips from the boat and cabin
Stories of slow living, fast wind, and wild tomatoes
Goods that make sense for the life between sea and soil
And eventually… we still plan to sail this boat to the coast. When? When she’s ready. When we are.
Until then, we’re happy right here — somewhere between the trees and the tide.
